On the occasion of World Maritime Day 2020, the International Maritime Organization, the International Labour Organization and the United Nations Global Compact, in collaboration with the International Chamber of Shipping and the International Transport Workers’ Federation, are bringing together heads of UN agencies, governments, multinational corporations, and shipowner and seafarer representatives, to discuss during an online side-event, the present crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic and raise awareness for the important and unsung role of seafarers and the need to facilitate Crew Changes around the world.

This event is being organized during the high-level opening week of the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly, and is the result of the international Shipping community’s efforts to convince Governments to declare seafarers as “key workers” and facilitate crew changes around the world in order to ensure the smooth continuation of trade and thus avoid the automatic multiplier negative effects that a disruption may have on the world economy.

Amongst others, United Nations officials, Government representatives and international shipping organisations representatives will feature at this event, including the IMO Secretary General, Mr. Kitack Lim, Mr. Guy Ryder, Director General of the International Labour Organization, Mr. Guy Platten, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and Mr. Stephen Cotton, General Secretary of the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF).
